As an assistant coach for my daughter's U11 hockey team, I had the opportunity to witness an invaluable lesson in focusing on what's within our control. Despite a tumultuous season with zero wins, 14 losses, and a negative goal differential, I was astounded by the resilience of the young players who remained committed to their effort, positioning, and sportsmanship.
The experience reminded us that we can all benefit from focusing on what we can control in our personal and professional lives. By doing so, we can better manage external factors beyond our control and easily navigate challenges. This principle aligns closely with the growth mindset described in Carol Dweck's "Mindset."
I was inspired by how the young players embraced this principle and refused to give up in the face of overwhelming odds. Their perseverance and growth mindset enabled them to recover faster from setbacks and remain focused on what they could control. Looking ahead, I am excited to see how these young players will continue to grow and develop in the upcoming season. They have demonstrated the importance of focusing on what's within our control and how this mindset can lead to success in various aspects of life.
This internal locus of control is a game-changer. It's about mastering our craft, refining processes, and fostering innovation within our teams. By adopting a growth mindset, like our hockey team, we navigate challenges, bounce back stronger, and ultimately achieve success from the inside out.
